Fire entices us, hypnotizes us, and captivates us with feelings of ecstatic energy. We are drawn to it just as moths are drawn to the light. The energy of fire relates to the burning passions, desires, goals, and ambitions we have. But, just as the spark of an idea ignites into creation it can easily burn out or start a wildfire.

Elemental fire has a duality that encompasses healing, radiance, and creativity as well as destruction, rage, and apathetic suffering. We see this duality as it becomes mirrored across the world. There’s the candle or small fire pit that brings joy, warmth, and community. A space to share stories, relax, or heal.

And then there’s forest fires that destroy hundreds of acres. The volcanos that erupt and rage over anything and anyone in its path. Both sides of this duality are necessary. The forest fire purges the way for new life to grow. The volcano eases Earth’s internalized pressures.

We operate in the same. Healing, life, compassion and creativity cannot exist without the anger, ravaging, impulsivities, or death. We do not get to feel only the good things.

Fire is the only element that we cannot physically touch without getting harmed. Elemental fire acts fairly similarly, in that it is not something we have authority over. Try as we might, we cannot control when a good idea pops into our mind.

This inability to control such a power makes energetic fire all that more desirable. The frenzied feeling of being overjoyed with laughter, good times, or “high” on life pulls us back over and over again. Think of how easy it is to be swept up into the highs of a concert or crowd, how exhausted you are afterwards, and how you’d like to go again because you enjoyed it so much.

This frenzied, ecstatic state that fire offers us, whether for joy and rebirth or destruction, actively guides the ups and downs of our lives. And, while we may not be able to control this energy, elemental fire does act in very cyclical means, which we can then work with. Ignition, burning, extinction, new/more fuel source.

Extending beyond humanity’s general connection to fire, the spiritual implications utilize fire like a doorway. A means of transformation. A means of connection and messaging. Of honoring and wishing.

Fire in this manner becomes a pillar of inter-dimensional direction and guidance. Fire lights our way in darkness. It grants our wishes on candles of happier days. It burns away our sorrows. It guides our whispers in the wind to the recipient of the message. It inspires us to take risks and accomplish great feats. It shows us how good life can be by obtaining our desires.

Fire energy can be intoxicatingly sweet. It’s that adrenaline rush after bungee jumping. The runner’s high. The joy of succeeding at something you worked your butt off for. The inspiration and excitement of a new novel or artsy idea. The attraction and desires of love. The rising from the ashes like a phoenix. The greed of egoistic pride. The addiction of manipulation. The rage fueled actions.

Elemental fire teaches us reverence in that playing with fire often leads to getting burned. Taking too many risks, having uncontrolled anger, excessively acting on impulse, ignoring things we shouldn’t, all have consequences we must face. Fire teaches accountability. The permanence involved in actions. That the only direction is forward.

But forward momentum must be stabilized to be beneficial.

When we have excessive fire energy roaring through us, we often become ungrounded and disconnected from those around us. We become impulsive or wrapped up in our own mania or problems. Or, we become apathetic, burnt out, and frustrated at the attempts for connection.

We don’t have authority over elemental fire, the only option is to work with it by being present focused. When the gift of creation and inspiration knocks at the door, answer. When it leaves, wish it well, and rest. And, when rage tumbles down the chimney, sit with it, acknowledge it, and remember to address your needs. Ignoring fire in your home only creates the potential for damage.

Fire energy within us can be stabilized by taking actions to remain grounded, regularly engaging in self-care, and advocating for balance between progression and resting— however that may look like for you as we all have different staminas.

Fire energy is a necessity of life. Without the sun, we would not be here. But too much sun causes a plethora of problems. Fire energy may be a portal and a guide, but it comes with a warning tag of limited interaction.

Everything in moderation because there is no light without dark and there are no highs without lows.

Taking everything exactly as it is in each and every moment, that is the beauty of fire.
